Tattoo Aftercare – Ignore It, and Your Tattoo Might End Up a Mess

admin » 29 April 2009 » In Tattoos » No Comments

Tattoo aftercare is vitally important to the health of your new tattoo, and it must not be ignored. Many people believe that once the needlework is done, their tattoo is a lock, but that is far from reality. The fact is that unless you properly care for your new tattoo, it could easily fade, lose saturation, flake, scar, or you could wind up with an infected mess on your body.

But if you ask a dozen tattoo artists how to take care of a new tattoo, you’ll probably get a dozen different answers. The conclusion is that no one knows precisely what will work for everyone, so your best bet is to follow a conservative, consensus-driven aftercare procedure.

Before getting into any specifics, it’s important that you follow your tattoo artist’s directions precisely. If their guidance conflicts with this article, always refer to their instructions. But in the absence of directions, here’s what you need to know.

Tattoo Aftercare Do’s

* Do use an approved aftercare moisturizer / healing cream

* Do leave your initial bandage over your tattoo for at least four to six hours, but no more than 12 hours

* Do keep your tattoo out of direct contact with water (this includes the shower)

* Do keep your tattoo moisturized

* Do pat your skin dry when the tattooed area gets wet

Tattoo Aftercare Don’ts

* Don’t expose your tattoo to sunlight until fully healed

* Don’t submerse your tattoo in water, and especially avoid chlorinated water

* Don’t let your tattoo dry out completely

* Don’t over moisturize your tattoo

* Don’t pick your tattoo scabs

* Don’t cover your tattoo with a bandage once the initial bandage has been removed

* Don’t scratch, bruise, or allow anything to rub against your tattoo with friction

Tattoo Aftercare Procedure

1) Four to six hours after you leave the tattoo parlor, wash your hands thoroughly with an antibacterial soap. You’ll want to ensure that your hands are free from dirt, germs, or anything infectious.

2) Carefully remove the bandage that was placed over your tattoo at the parlor. With a mild antibacterial soap, carefully wash the tattooed area, removing any of the greasy covering, ink residue, blood, etc. You’ll know the area is clean when it just feels like wet skin. Be very gentle with your skin. Pat your skin dry — do not brush or rub dry.

3) Apply a thin layer of moisturizer / healing ointment. Popular brands recommended at parlors include A&D Ointment, Neosporin, and Bacitracin. There are also tattoo-specific products that are designed exclusively for aftercare, and they include Tattoo Goo, H2Ocean Aftercare, and Black Cat Tattoo Cream. If you have a large, expensive tattoo, or a tattoo with deep colors that you want to protect, they are probably worth the investment.

4) Three to four times per day, apply a thin film of anti-bacterial / healing ointment to your tattoo. You will want to use enough to moisten the tattooed area, but not so much as to leave streaks or allow it to build up. Your goal is to moisturize the area only, so start with a small amount and work it in with your fingers.

The problem with over moisturizing the skin is fading inks. If you slather on a thick coating of Neosporin and keep it moist throughout the day, your tattoo might heal in just over a week — but the inks will fade. If, however, you lightly coat the area three to four times per day, your tattoo might take two to three weeks to heal, but the colors will set properly. The lesson to learn is healing quickly does not necessarily mean healing properly.

5) Cover the tattooed area with light, loose fitting clothing, and be mindful of your tattoo. Don’t scratch or pick your tattoo! If you must, gently slap the skin or use rubbing alcohol to relieve any itching or irritation.

While there might seem to be quite a few steps to follow, they are quite simple. The bottom line is that you need to pay attention to your tattoo, and allow the body to heal itself as naturally as possible. You will do everything you can to assist that process, but you don’t want to rush it — just help it. If you can do that, and stay diligent with your care for 2 to 3 weeks, you will be blessed with a rich tattoo that can be enjoyed for years.

Following these steps will ensure that your tattoo heals quickly and properly, and will help the inks set and stay vibrant and bold. Then you can enjoy your new tattoo for a lifetime.

Ankle Tattoos

admin » 28 April 2009 » In Foot Tattoos » No Comments

Tattoos were earlier thought to be for big and robust men but gradually with time tattooing has entered the mainstream of fashion and is now equally preferred by both the sexes. Tattoos have undergone several changes with time but the idea of having a permanent mark on the body still remains to be appealing to many people.

Since there are many spots on the human body that are popular for tattoos, ankle tattoos are gaining popularity recently. Though they are not as common as arm tattoos but are catching on as a major trend. Ankle tattoos are generally done on the extreme lower calf, all the way down to the anklebone. Those tattoos that are done higher on the leg, above the bony part of the ankle are less painful, and often can be larger in size than the tattoos that take place on the ankle and foot region. The procedure involves the use of needles and the person who will be undergoing the process of tattooing needs to complete his/her meal an hour before their appointment. This is followed to keep the blood sugar levels up so that it can be of great help if you are even a bit uncomfortable around needles.

An ankle tattoo can be small enough that it is not noticeable unless the person is very close and can be a tribal symbol, a floral arrangement or an initial. Whatever the design may be it depends on the individual’s choice thus reflecting a part of the personality of the person who has it. Many prefers tattooing small design because they are less painful and at the same time it allows them to carry something personal on their bodies always which cannot be located easily. Many women choose an ankle tat because of the fact that it can easily be shown or covered with just a quick change of clothing for instance with socks. Another more important point to be remembered is that because your ankle is at the end of an extremity, tattoos here may tend to bleed a bit more than in other areas of the body so do not get scare so avoid getting an ankle tattoo right before walking a long distance and elevate your leg in case of swelling irritation or bleeding.

Once you have decided on a design and coloring for your ankle tattoos you will want to visit a reputable establishment that perform safe tattoos. As soon as you get your tattoo done avoid sunlight, Salt water or chlorinated water for the first few days to keep the colors of the tattoo vibrant for years to come.

Tattoo Charity

admin » 27 April 2009 » In Tattoo Flash » No Comments

When you think of charities you probably don’t even think about tattoos in the same sentence. Well I was pleasantly surprised yesterday to find out that this one tattoo parlor in Phoenix was holding a A 15-hour long fundraiser for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. A 30 minute session with one of the tattoo artists from  Living Canvas Tattoos cost only $15! You honesty can not beat that price when an average 30 minute session would probably start at around $60 and up depending on the tattoo artist.

This charity event was a birthday celebration for the tattoo studio. They were celebrating 15 years of services so they thought 15 years with $15 tattoos for 15 hours would be a great event. The owner of the tattoo studio said, “There are so many charities, how do you go wrong with kids?”. Which I think is fantastic. It just goes to show that even tough man covered in tattoos that probably lead not so normal life style still have a huge heart for children and charities. The Owner Mark Walters, knew this event would more than likely be a huge hit and expected the rough bikers dudes to show as well as the average soccer mom because the money was going to such a good cause. However, Mark did state that any tattoo design will be accepted as long as it fell into the 30 minute session if not the $15 would not apply.

I truly think this whole concept is wonderful. I wish more tattoo studios would do things like this. It benefits not only tattoo enthusiasts but it also goes to a great cause! So listen up tattoo studio owners think real hard about following in Living Canvas Tattoos footsteps. The satisfaction of doing something great for someone else far out ways any dollar amount you could earn from given a tattoo.

What you Didn’t Know About Tattoos

admin » 27 April 2009 » In Tattoos » No Comments

Despite the taboo surrounding tattoo art, the tattoo industry is virtually celebrated. Currently, tattoo searches are ranked in the top 50 amongst popular search engines. During the 1900’s, the tattoo gallery was ranked the sixth fastest growing retail venture.

Consequently, every language is a favorite for tattoo designs; from tribal tattoo designs to Japanese and Chinese characters or symbols.

The tattoo industry has become extremely versatile in its market locations and designs. It has truly proven that ‘skin’ is in. Since 1936, it was estimated that at least 10 million Americans had at least one tattoo. By 2003, those numbers had nearly tripled. An incredible 36 percent of persons between the ages of 18- 25 and 40 percent of those aged 26- 40 had at least one tattoo according to a survey completed in 2006. The female tattoo gallery and feminine tattoos began to shine due to the increase in tattoo art amongst female actresses. Subsequently, it is safe to say that the tattoo culture predominately exists in society as a result of the growing number of celebrities who are inked along with their presence in movies, songs and art. Unique as it may be, tattoo history is still evolving in the attempt to beauty oneself.

Although tattoo removal is possible; removing the actual pigmentation is typically expensive and painful. It is recommended that you carefully think about your tattoo ideas as it is ideally a permanent fixture. Once you have decided to get inked and you have thoroughly looked through a tattoo gallery that has a variety of tattoo pictures and tattoo designs, then you must locate a reputable tattoo artist. The artist must practice good sanitation and is very aware of basic tattoo health risk. The tattoo professional must also be informed of the proper tattoo aftercare.

Tattoos are generally used as expression of status, spirituality, or simply a means to defy convention. For instance, a tattoo design that may be a direct representation for an individual may be the butterfly tattoo designs which sometimes represent the birth of a baby. Or someone may choose religious tattoos as a dedication to their faith. And, the dragon tattoo may represent defeat or courage. Historically, tattoos and tattooing are extremely controversial, eliciting both positive and negative reactions from people all over the world. Unfortunately, society lacks education about tattoos; their history and their significance. If people were actually educated with the information, they may appreciate the legacy and uniqueness of the art.

Brief History of the Tattoo

admin » 26 April 2009 » In Tattoos » No Comments

The tattoo has been around for thousands of years. The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian word ‘tattau’, which means to strike or hit. Tattoos have been used as status symbols, amulets, religious symbols, decoration, and punishment. The earliest tattoos were found on female mummies in Egypt. The mummies were believed to be from approximately 2000 B.C. However, there is evidence that women had tattoos even earlier from figurines that were believed to be made around 4000 B.C.

It appears that primarily women received tattoos in ancient Egypt. It was first believed that women with tattoos were of low status. However, these female mummies were found in an area where the elite and royalty were buried. It is possible that the designs were meant to be amulets during pregnancy and birth. For the most part, the tattoos are concentrated on the abdomen, thighs, and breasts. The deity Bes was often tattooed on women’s thighs. Bes was considered to be the protector of women during labor and birth.

Archaeologists discovered a sharp point that was set in a wooden handle in Egypt that is believed to have been used to make tattoos around 3000 B.C. Bronze instruments from 1450 B.C. that are thought to have been used as tattooing tools were also found. These tools were very similar to tattooing tools that were used in the 19th century.

In Egypt, a tattoo was primarily made of dotted patterns that consisted of diamond shapes and lines and, as mentioned above, small figures of the god Bes. In order to make the dots typically a dark pigment, such as ash or soot, was placed in the pricked skin. While Egyptian tattoos were usually dark, other cultures, such as the Inuit, used lighter colors along with darker pigments.

There are many other early cultures that used tattoos. The people of the Altai Mountain region marked their skin with ornate tribal tattoos. A male body was found in the ice in 1948. His arms, legs, and body were covered with tattoos of animals. In 1993, a woman’s body was found in a tomb in the Altai Mountains. She had a tattoo of a mythical animal on her shoulders and more tattoos on her wrists and thumb. It is believed that the tattoo was a mark of nobility. The culture of early Britain also used tattoos as a mark of status and royalty.

Among the Romans and Greeks, the tattoo was used mostly to mark someone as part of a religious sect or to part someone as a criminal. The use of tattoos spread through the Roman Empire until Christianity began to emerge. Tattoos were then considered a pagan practice that disfigured the body and were banned by Emperor Constantine.

Some Native American cultures, such as the Cree, used tattoos to mark their faces with delicate and detailed patterns. The Japanese began tattooing their skin with intricate designs at the end of the 3rd century. Polynesian cultures also used elaborate tattoos that featured geometric designs that often covered the entire body.

The Maori culture of New Zealand used elaborate facial tattoos to mark individuals of high status. Each design was unique to that individual and represented specific information, such as rank and skills that have been mastered. Warriors were given their tattoo in stages in order to correspond with various stages in their lives.

Modern tattoos are amazing works of art that use many different colors and span all cultures. The tattoo artists of Samoa create their tattoos as they did in ancient times, without modern equipment. Many modern African cultures also use tattoos, from the facial tattoos of the Wodabe to the fine dotted marks used by the Berber in Algeria.

Although the tattoo is used in many different cultures, for the most part, their use seems to have begun independently in each. Both ancient and modern cultures use tattoos for therapy, protection, fashion, to mark people from different groups or religions, or simply a form of self expression.

Girl Tattoo Ideas: Best Tips Before Getting a Tattoo

admin » 25 April 2009 » In Foot Tattoos » No Comments

If you’re looking for girl tattoo ideas, then it shouldn’t take you too long to find one. From the wacky to the classic designs, you can find a unique tattoo ideas online and even offline. Before you do get a tattoo, there are a couple of considerations that you should take note of when it comes to tattoo ideas.

Go to the Right Sources

Getting a tattoo is a major decision. You don’t want to make a mistake with your tattoo design because you are stuck with it for life. If you are bent on getting a tattoo, get a design from a reputable source. Here are some possible design sources:

- Getting the right tattoo artist can make all the difference. All artists who would like to maintain a regular clientele build their design portfolios. You should however, opt for an artist who has had real experience tattooing the designs in his gallery. You probably don’t want to be the experimental first client.

- Online galleries are also a great choice. Many of these galleries contain hundreds of thousands of categorized designs that you can choose from. If you are a great fan of the art, you may want to sign up for a membership so you can have access to unlimited tattoo designs.

- Be open about getting your girl tattoo ideas from other inspirations. You may be able to find a good design in a textbook or fantasy book. Some of your friends may also have cool and unique tattoos. Make sure though to consult an experienced tattoo artist about the feasibility of the design of your choice.

Pick One that Matches Your Spot

The body spot where you put your tattoo on can make a lot of difference. There are some body parts that just look better with certain patterns and design sizes. Make sure you consider the spot you want tattooed before settling on a design. Your foot for example may not look very good with a huge design. Girls’ feet will look daintier with small designs. Another example would be tattoo designs on the lower back. You can settle for a small design but that would be useless if your real purpose is to show off your curves. If showing off is what you want, settle for full horizontal designs that stretch over the lower back.

Settle for Something Meaningful

Ink tattoos cannot be erased. That means you should rather settle for a design that has some meaning for you. You would probably feel better if you could explain to curious people what the symbols in your body mean. Knowing what your designs mean will also ensure that you need not get stuck with designs that have bad connotations. Pick tattoos that you are sure you will love for the rest of your life.

Don’t Scrimp

There are discount tattoo designs and services. Just like everything else, you have the opportunity to save a few dollars on your tattoo design. You could for example pick free designs online or settle for a lesser known tattoo artist. You should consider though that you are asking for a service that cannot be undone. If you want a great tattoo, always settle for the best. Don’t scrimp on your tattoo design or artist.

Open your mind and eyes to the possibility of discovering girl tattoo designs everywhere. Do not, however, make the mistake of picking ideas in random. Take your time going through numerous options before settling for a design.
