A Computer Networking Course in 2009
Computer and network support technicians are constantly sought after in the United Kingdom, as businesses become progressively more dependent upon their knowledge and fixing and repairing abilities. Our country’s need for more skilled and qualified individuals grows, as human beings become consistently more dependent upon PC’s in the modern world.
Making the most suitable career option is hard enough – so which sectors are important to investigate and what questions do we need to be raising?
Don’t get hung-up, as many people do, on the training course itself. Training is not an end in itself; this is about employment. Focus on the end-goal. It’s possible, in some situations, to thoroughly enjoy one year of training but end up spending 10 or 20 years in a job you hate, entirely because you stumbled into it without some quality research when it was needed – at the start.
Make sure you investigate what your attitude is towards career development, earning potential, and how ambitious you are. It’s vital to know what (if any) sacrifices you’ll need to make for a particular role, which particular accreditations are needed and how you’ll gain real-world experience. We’d recommend you always seek guidance and advice from a skilled professional before settling on a study path, so you’re sure from the outset that the chosen route will give you the skills for the job being sought.
Only consider learning programmes that’ll move onto commercially recognised qualifications. There are far too many trainers promoting their own ‘in-house’ certificates that are essentially useless when you start your job-search. All the major IT organisations such as Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA or Adobe all have nationally approved proficiency programs. Major-league companies like these will give some sparkle to your CV.
One of the most important things to insist on has to be 24×7 round-the-clock support through trained professional instructors and mentors. Too many companies only provide office hours (or extended office hours) support. You’ll be waiting ages for an answer with email based support, and so-called telephone support is normally just routed to a call-centre that will just take down the issue and email it over to their technical team – who will attempt to call you within 24-48 hrs, when it’s convenient to them. This isn’t a lot of good if you’re stuck with a particular problem and have a one hour time-slot in which to study.
World-class organisations offer a web-based 24×7 service involving many support centres from around the world. You get an easy to use environment that seamlessly selects the best facility available any time of the day or night: Support when you need it. Don’t compromise when it comes to your support. The vast majority of trainees that fall by the wayside, are in that situation because of a lack of support.
Students who consider this area of study can be very practical by nature, and don’t really enjoy classrooms, and endless reading of dry academic textbooks. If this is putting you off studying, use multimedia, interactive learning, with on-screen demonstrations and labs. Recent studies into the way we learn shows that much more of what we learn in remembered when we involve as many senses as possible, and we put into practice what we’ve been studying.
Top of the range study programs now offer interactive discs. Through instructor-led video classes you’ll learn your subject via their teaching and demonstrations. Then you test your knowledge by practicing and interacting with the software. Don’t take any chances and look at a small selection of training examples before you purchase a course. The minimum you should expect would be instructor-led video demonstrations and a variety of audio-visual and interactive sections.
It’s usually bad advice to opt for on-line only training. Connection quality and reliability varies hugely across the ISP (internet service provider) market, you should always obtain physical media such as CD or DVD ROM’s.
It’s quite a normal occurrence for students not to check on something of absolutely vital importance – how their company segments the courseware elements, and into how many parts. You may think that it makes sense (with most training taking 1-3 years for a full commercial certification,) that a training provider will issue the training stage by stage, until you’ve passed all the exams. But: With thought, many trainees understand that their training company’s typical path to completion is not what they would prefer. It’s often the case that a different order of study is more expedient. And what happens if they don’t finish at the pace they expect?
In a perfect world, you’d get ALL the training materials right at the beginning – so you’ll have them all to come back to in the future – as and when you want. You can also vary the order in which you move through the program if another more intuitive route presents itself.
One crafty way that training companies make extra profits is by charging for exams up-front and then including an ‘Exam Guarantee’. This looks like a great idea for the student, until you think it through:
You’re paying for it one way or another. It’s definitely not free – it’s just been rolled into the price of the whole package. Evidence shows that if a student pays for their own exams, one by one, the chances are they’re going to pass every time – since they’re aware of their investment in themselves and so will prepare more thoroughly.
Does it really add up to pay the training college at the start of the course for examination fees? Go for the best offer at the time, rather than pay marked up fees – and do it locally – rather than in some remote place. Why borrow the money or pay in advance (plus interest of course) on examination fees when you don’t need to? A lot of profit is netted by organisations charging upfront for all their exams – and then cashing in when they’re not all taken. The majority of companies will insist on pre-tests and with-hold subsequent exam entries from you until you’ve demonstrated an excellent ability to pass – making an ‘exam guarantee’ just about worthless.
Spending hundreds or even thousands extra on ‘Exam Guarantees’ is short-sighted – when study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is what will really see you through.
Being a part of the information technology industry is amongst the most stimulating and innovative industries that you can get into right now. To be working on the cutting-edge of technology puts you at the fore-front of developments affecting everyone who lives in the 21st century. Society largely thinks that the technological advancement we have experienced is slowing down. All indicators point in the opposite direction. Massive changes are on the horizon, and most especially the internet is going to dominate how we conduct our lives.
A usual IT man or woman in the United Kingdom has been shown to get a lot more money than employees on a par in much of the rest of the economy. Mean average incomes are amongst the highest in the country. Apparently there is no end in sight for IT jobs growth throughout this country. The industry continues to develop quickly, and as we have a significant shortage of skilled professionals, it’s most unlikely that this will change significantly for quite some time to come.
